NO FORMAL SEWING TRAINING TO ONE OF JETS TAILORING'S MOST VALUABLE STAFF.

Updated: Mar 17, 2021

To commemorate International Women's Day this month, we feature an exceptional member of the Jets Tailoring team who plays a vital role in our factory's overall production. This month we feature Delmay Elton, who hails from Wanigela in the Nations Capital.

Delmay joined Jets Tailoring Limited in 2017 and has been there since. "Before joining Jets Tailoring, I was doing informal businesses back in my community to help sustain my family," says Mrs Elton. I learned about Jets Tailoring Limited through a friend. They were recruiting women to work as Finishing Touchers, so I decided to give it a try. Without any formal training and sewing experience, they recruited me for the job. My role in the finishing touchers section was pretty basic. It involves sewing buttonholes, ironing, cleaning and packing, and most importantly, cross-checking the finished products with the samples.

"While working in this section, I was also encouraged by my boss to observe other staffs who were in production," says Mrs Elton. Through observation and guidance of my manager Mrs June Bonit, I learned how to sew and cut. Within two years, I got promoted to production in the factory and have been there since. Today I can proudly sew complicated dresses, shirts and trousers. With the skills that I have gained, I also do my sewing at home to earn extra income.

'My encouragement to fellow women is to take the first step in faith, in whatever you're trying to do. Everything will fall in place eventually," says Mrs Elton.
